Artist Biography

Erica Peebus (b.1982) recently moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana from Portland, Oregon where she received her BFA with an emphasis in painting in 2013 from the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Erica’s acrylic paintings can be described as both dark and whimsical. Employing a strong illustrative quality, she mixes realism with graphic details. Her works often represent plants, animals, bones, and the human figure exposing her fascination with life and death as well as her love for the natural and super natural world. Her work is heavily influenced by religious symbolism, renaissance paintings, mythology, folklore, and surrealism.

Artist Statement

I make art as a way of understanding and learning about the world around me. Through painting I engage with deeper, intuitive parts of myself. I find great joy in experiencing the state of flow, where I believe magical things happen. I began creating art at a young age because it was a means of connecting to the world in a deep and meaningful way and of better understanding myself. Ive always found it easier to communicate my thoughts, feelings, and ideas through images and gestures than through language alone. As an acrylic painter, I continue to use visual language as a lens through which I relate to my environment.

My artwork is a surreal journey through other worlds, a dimension where conventional laws of physics have no ruling effect. where thoughts with intent are allowed to take visual form. Here intuition, memories, visions, and dreams are as tangible as everyday objects. through my work I visit concepts that have fascinated, scared, and intrigued me since I was a child. The results are compositions filled with symbolism and hidden meaning that hint at a narrative which is left for the viewer to unravel. Topics such as alchemy, metaphysics, mythology, spirituality, nature, and death can often be found in my paintings.

I often work with dream symbolism and am continually inspired by my dreams. It is my goal to decipher and elucidate the vision I find between these more ethereal realms and to create it here in the material realm. It is my hope that when people view my paintings they get an eerie sense of familiarity that makes them feel deeply and spiritually connected to the world around and within them.
