The Mayapple provides the turtle with a safe, shaded microclimate and a rich food source (it’s perfectly positioned ripe fruit), while the turtle acts as the plant’s primary seed disperser. The Mayapple depends on the box turtle for germination as the seed is 40% more likely to germinate after being passed through the digestive system of the turtle. I paint symbiotic relationships between plants and animals so often because I hope that my paintings will inspire people, encouraging reciprocity between humans and nature.
